Frequently asked questions

  • bagMUSTER is a national product stewardship program focused on the collection and recycling of single-use polypropylene (PP) agricultural plastic bags. The program provides farmers, growers, and agricultural businesses with a practical solution for responsibly disposing of these bags, ensuring they are recycled and kept out of landfills, waterways, and ecosystems.

  • bagMUSTER accepts single-use polypropylene (PP) bags used in agriculture. These include bags for crop protection products, fertiliser, seed, grain (excluding silo bags), stock feed, and pet food. The bags typically range in size from 25kg to over 1,200kg bulk bags. Silo bags and other types of plastic bags are not currently accepted.

  • The process is simple:

    1. Purchase eligible polypropylene bags from participating retailers.

    2. Collect and store your used bags until you're ready to recycle them.

    3. Prepare your bags by cleaning, emptying, and removing any non-PP liners. Roll or fold them for easy transport.

    4. Register your bags online and select a collection site.

    5. Drop off your registered bags at your nearest bagMUSTER collection site, providing your registration confirmation.

  • The program is open to farmers, growers, and anyone who purchases polypropylene agricultural bags from participating retailers. Retailers, processors, and manufacturers can also participate in the program by becoming partners, helping promote sustainable practices and ensuring plastic waste is recycled.

  • There is no cost to recycle eligible bags through the program.

  • You can drop off your eligible plastic bags at any designated bagMUSTER collection site. To find the collection site nearest to you, visit our collection site webpage and use our locator tool.

  • Registration is done online through our collection sites webpage. You’ll need to provide information on the number of bags you are recycling and select the collection site where you’ll drop them off. This registration process helps track the bags and ensures compliance with sustainability and reporting requirements.

  • After collection, the bags are sent to recycling facilities where they are processed into recycled plastic resin. This resin can then be used to manufacture new products, contributing to a circular economy and reducing the need for virgin plastic materials.

  • By recycling polypropylene bags through bagMUSTER, participants help reduce plastic waste on farms, prevent pollution in waterways, and decrease the volume of plastic entering landfills. The program supports the agricultural sector's transition towards a circular economy, preserving natural resources and reducing the overall environmental impact of farming.

  • bagMUSTER is currently operating in select regions, including the Ballarat region, Northern Victoria, the Mallee/Wimmera, and key urban centers like Geelong and Western Melbourne suburbs. Over time, the program will expand to cover all of Victoria and eventually other states as recycling infrastructure becomes available. Stay tuned for updates on new collection sites and locations.

  • Yes, if you’re interested in supporting bagMUSTER by becoming a collection site or inspector, contact Agsafe for more information. Inspectors play a crucial role in ensuring the proper handling of collected plastic bags, and full training is provided.

  • bagMUSTER provides participants, especially retailers and manufacturers, with detailed reports on plastic collection, recycling, and resin outcomes. These reports can support internal sustainability reporting and help businesses meet regulatory or Best Management Practice (BMP) requirements.

  • Eligible bags purchased from participating retailers can be recycled through the bagMUSTER program. Not all bags are eligible, so it’s important to check with your retailer. Some bags may display the bagMUSTER logo, while others may be identified as eligible on your receipt. For more information, ask your participating retailer to confirm which bags can be recycled.

  • If there isn’t a collection site near you, sign up for updates on the bagMUSTER program. The program is expanding, and new collection sites will be added regularly. In the meantime, keep your bags stored safely and ready for future recycling opportunities.
